THE parents of a 13-year-old girl are facing charges of child neglect after locking police found out they were locking her in the basement, forcing her to wear nappies and sending the teenager to school covered in faeces.
An anonyms phone call to the Brookfield police station in Wisconsin, USA, brought attention to the girl’s circumstances after the caller told officers the teenager was being kept in the basement of a Brookfield home, and was being “treated like an animal”.
According to Fox 8 news, the teenager — who has a mild form of autism and cognitive difficulties — was forced into an adult onsie and a diaper after getting home from school, before she was sent to school the next morning, covered in dry faeces.
When police arrived at the home in March, the found the 13-year-old girl’s basement room was about 10 degrees celsius.
After further investigations, police also discovered that teachers at Wisconsin Hills Middle School reported the neglect to social workers in December last year.
It has emerged that a social worker has known about the girl’s living conditions for a year, and told the police that the girl was being treated like an animal.
The couple — mother and stepfather — are due to appear in court next week.
